Star Spotting! Movie Magnet Ewan McGregor to Make His Broadway Debut in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing

Scottish movie star Ewan McGregor, famous for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and his wide range of diverse screen roles, is set to make his Broadway debut next fall. McGregor will headline a new revival of Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing, directed by Sam Gold, at the American Airlines Theatre. The production will begin performances on October 2, 2014 and open officially on October 30. The limited engagement is scheduled to play through January 4, 2015.

McGregor is no stranger to the stage: He was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance as Sky Masterson in the West End revival of Guys and Dolls in 2006. His other London stage credits include playing Iago in Othello at the Donmar Warehouse and appearing in Little Malcolm and His Struggles Against the Eunuchs in the West End. Of course, the actor is best known for his many film roles including the heroin-addicted Mark Renton in Trainspotting, the legendary Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Episode I and singing and dancing opposite Nicole Kidman in the movie musical Moulin Rouge. His many other film credits include Haywire, The Ghost, Amelia, Jack the Giant Slayer, Angels and Demons, I Love You Phillip Morris, Deception, Incendiary, Cassandra's Dream, Miss Potter, Scenes of a Sexual Nature, Stay, The Island, Star Wars: Episode II and Star Wars: Episode III, Young Adam, Down With Love, Big Fish, Black Hawk Down, Rogue Trader, Little Voice, Velvet Goldmine, A Life Less Ordinary, The Pillow Book and Shallow Grave. McGregor will next be seen in the upcoming films Jane Got a Gun, Mortdecai and the big screen adaptation of Tracy Letts' Pulitzer and Tony-winning play August: Osage County. 

The Real Thing centers on Henry (McGregor), a successful playwright, who is unhappily married to Charlotte, the lead actress in his current play about a marriage on the verge of collapse. When Henry’s affair with their friend Annie threatens to destroy his own marriage, he discovers that life has started imitating art. After Annie leaves her husband so she and Henry can begin a new life together, he can’t help but wonder whether their love is fiction or the real thing. The Tony-winning play explores relationships, fidelity and the passions that often blur our perception of love.
